Annapurna Base Camp (ABC)
The Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek is one of Nepal’s most popular and rewarding trekking experiences. It offers a remarkable journey into the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary, surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks. The trek is popular for its moderate difficulty, rich cultural encounters, diverse landscapes, and stunning close-up views of some of the world’s highest mountains.
Major peaks visible along the trek include Annapurna I (8,091m), the 10th highest mountain in the world, Machhapuchhre (6,993m), Annapurna South (7,219m), Hiunchuli (6,441m), and Gangapurna (7,455m). The trek typically starts from Kande or Ghandruk, reachable by a short drive from Pokhara.
The best seasons to trek are spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) when the weather is clear and the views are spectacular. Moderate physical fitness is necessary as trekkers hike 5–7 hours daily through ascending trails, stone steps, and alpine terrain. Proper acclimatization is important, especially beyond 3,000m.
Accommodation along the route is in well-maintained teahouses offering basic facilities, warm meals, and local hospitality. The region is rich in flora and fauna, from rhododendron forests to wildlife such as Himalayan monals, Danphe, langurs and Musk Deer.
Trekkers need the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). Though it’s possible to trek independently, hiring a licensed guide enhances safety, provides local insight, and supports responsible tourism. The ABC trek is ideal for those seeking a balanced adventure with natural beauty, cultural experience, and mountain grandeur.
