Day 1: Sundarijal to Chisapani (6 hours)
The journey starts from Sundarijal Bus stop after purchasing tickets for passing through Shivapuri National Park. It costs Rs. 1000 for the tickets. The first day is mostly uphill, trying to get to the other side of the Shivapuri hill. This day tests your endurance and fortitude. There rarely is any food stops, so you will need to reach Mulkharka to refuel. Along the way, you will pass Dhap Dam, a serene and beautiful spot, where you can admire the lake that provides clean drinking water for the valley below. Pushing forward, you will reach Dorje Lakhpa Lodge in Chisapani, where you will rest for the night.
Day 2: Chisapani to Nagarkot (6 hours)
Early morning, you can see the beautiful sunrise, though the weather conditions may vary. After eating breakfast in the lodge, begin the trek to the next destination, Nagarkot. It is an easier experience than Day 1 as the terrain is mostly flat, which makes walking more easier and faster. Reaching Jhule checkpoint, you need to show your Shivapuri NP ticket. At lunchtime you will reach Jaharsing Pauwa Bus stop, where you can eat lunch and rest before moving forward to the hotel. The final stretch is about 2 hours where there are many choices to stay for the night.
Day 3: Nagarkot to Dhulikhel (7 hours)
Morning, you can see a beautiful sunrise with picturesque hills, mountains and valleys. The Nagarkot marketplace is the place to have breakfast and move on towards the next destination, Dhulikhel. While trekking, you can experience the beautiful views of nature and people. Having a proper guide in this section is crucial as getting lost is very easy. Even if you do get lost, the locals are very hospitable and will show you the directions. Lunch can be eaten in Dhulikhel and then move forward to the final destination, the hotel of your choice.
Day 4: Dhulikhel to Namobuddha (3 hours)
As always, the day starts with viewing the beautiful sunrise. This day is the shortest and the easiest day. Eating breakfast, the trek continues to the next destination, Namobuddha. Since this is the shortest day, taking your time and enjoying the views or stopping to rest often would be recommended. Upon reaching Namobuddha, you will find a Buddhist Monastery built over the legendary site of a Bodhisattva’s selfless sacrifice to a starving tigress and her cubs. If you have booked a hotel inside the monastery, you will gain the privilege of eating with the monks and attending their prayer ceremony. This is one of the best places to learn about Tibetan Buddhism and culture. If you do not wish to stay inside the monastery, there are still private hotels that can be booked outside.
Day 5: Namobuddha to Panauti to Kathmandu (2 hours + 1.5-hour ride)
On the final day, wake up early and attend the morning prayer with the monks. The young monks will play instruments and sing their hymns. If you stay at the Monastery’s guest house, breakfast will be provided which typically includes tingmo (Tibetan steamed bread) and tea. Today, you can complete the exploration of the monastery that was missed yesterday before setting out to Panauti. Descending the hill, you will pass through orange orchards, landslide-marked hillsides, and bustling village. Upon reaching Panauti, if you are interested you can have a tour of Panauti. You can either stay for a night there or return back to Kathmandu.
