Upper Mustang Trek and Tour
Upper Mustang is known as the last forbidden kingdom of Nepal. This region is connected to the Tibetan plateau and has a semi-desert climate. Most trekkers take a day excursion to the former capital of the Mustang Kingdom, Lo Manthang, and its surrounding areas.
The people of Upper Mustang practice Mahayana (Tibetan) Buddhism, and there are numerous historical monasteries, traditional village settings, and cave dwellings high up on the cliffs.
The Government of Nepal allowed tourists to visit Upper Mustang starting in 1992. This region is still considered a restricted area, so tourists need to obtain a special permit that costs US$500 per person for 10 days. To get the Upper Mustang trek permit, there must be a minimum of two trekkers together.
Trekkers can experience diverse landscapes and cultures with stunning mountain views of Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Mt. Annapurna I (8,091m), Mt. Nilgiri (7,061m), and more. Horse riding and ancient monastery visits are some exciting experiences for trekkers. Now, most of this area has off-road access, so in case of any emergency, one can take a jeep ride back to Pokhara.
